Payload integration

Telespazio plays a leading role in supporting users of Italian payloads on board the ISS. Specifically, the User Support Centre for the experimental facilities ALTEA and MDS two of the payloads developed by the Italian Space Agency (ASI) to carry out scientific experiments on board the ISS was designed, built and opened at the company's plant in Naples.
These activities form part of Italys contribution towards the construction and utilisation of the ISS. |
Through the Italian Space Agency, Italy is not only entitled as a member nation of the ESA to make use of the ISS, but also has the exclusive right to use and exploit additional ISS resources for scientific, technological and commercial purposes, as part of a specific bilateral agreement with NASA.
The monitoring and remote control of experiments on the ISS is only possible via the connection to the NASA centres networked to the ISS. Infrastructure connected to the NASA centres must also be certified and access-enabled in order to guarantee the required security standards and the compatibility of the technical and operating interfaces.
Telespazio fulfils the role of USOC for the ALTEA and MDS payloads from its plant in Naples, thereby ensuring that all work relating to the conduct of the experiments can be carried out. This covers support for the crew and NASA control centres while the astronauts are carrying out activities on board, remote control of the facility by sending telecommands from Earth, receipt and monitoring of scientific and technical telemetry data in real time from the ISS and its distribution to the principal investigator (PI) for scientific analysis and the payload developer (PD) for technical support, management of off-nominal situations and support for re-planning activities with the NASA centres.
