The US Department of Defence (DoD) DMSP satellite is equipped with a photomultiplier tube based sensor (OLS) that is able to map city light during night. OLS data are available from 1985 and are commonly exploited for evaluating urban growth. Italy city lights variations between year 1993 and 2000 are shown with the following color coding: no lights background is cyan, black and gray show lights stable in time, red and yellow lights much brighter or new in year 2000 and blue lights present in year 1993 which are dimmer or missing in year 2000.
