SAR Precision Image Products


SAR Basic Image ProductsOther SAR Image products are processed to increasing levels of radiometric and geometric accuracy. All products are multi-look (to reduce speckle), ground range and system corrected, calibrated to correct SAR antenna pattern and range spreading loss.

Precision Image (PRI)


This is the standard product for most imaging-radar applications. It is the first product from which radar backscatter can be derived for geophysical modelling. No correction is applied for terrain-induced radiometric effects, the image is not geocoded, and terrain distortion (foreshortening and layover) has not been removed.

Ellipsoid Geocoded Image (GEC)

This high level product precisely locates and rectifies the SAR image on a map projection. Radar backscatter can be derived for geophysical modelling. The scene measures 100 x 100 km and is rotated according to the map grid. There is no correction applied for terrain distortion or radiometry.

Terrain Geocoded Image (GTC)

This is a multi-look (speckle-reduced), ground range, system corrected image, precisely located and rectified onto a map projection and corrected for terrain distortion with a Digital Elevation Model. It is the highest level SAR image product and is intended for applications in terrain with significant relief and where the geo-reference is important. Radar backscatter can be derived from the image, but there is no correction of terrain-induced radiometric effects. The product also includes a file with layover areas and a shadow mask, plus the local incidence angle for each pixel.
