MARCOAST
(MARine and COASTal environmental
information center)
This project covers a variety of crucial issues
related to the understanding and management of sea
waters and coastal regions.
The service portfolio ranges from the provision of data
to integrated products, aiming at monitoring the water
quality, the coastal hydrodynamics and land-cover changes,
developing environmental indicators to investigate the
coastal erosion and the effects of human activity.
The marine products include the monitoring of the chlorophyll
concentration, water transparency, sea-surface temperature,
algal bloom and other related services.
The Earth Observation data sources are MERIS,
AVHRR, SeaWIFS and MODIS.
Telespazio is also involved in the MarCoast ESA-GMES
program activities, where it plays the role of Oil Spill
leader in the Mediterranean area, providing Greece, Spain,
Italy, France, Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia with the NRT Oil
Spill service.
MarCoast is intended to qualify a portfolio
of information services as fit for operational purpose and
demonstrate progress towards sustainable implementation
of these services. Oil spill information services include
basic pollution alert, polluter identification through
combination of EO data and Automatic Identification System
vessel information and oil slick drift forecasting.
During the Third and last Phase of the project (2008), also COSMO-SkyMed data have been acquired and processed in NRT (Near Real Time) by Telespazio:

Telespazio set up a Service Chain to automatically integrate information gathered by EO satellites, AIS (Automatic Identification System) data made available by the Italian Coast Guard.
The End User is allowed to access a Web-GIS interface to visualize the results of analysis and data integration, in order to individuate vessels in proximity of the oil spots and potentially responsible for pollution.
