A school for Niky with FullSat Marine

Poste   Thanks to an Internet videoconferencing connection provided by Telespazio, a Finmeccanica/Alcatel Company, and Telecom Italia, little Niky will at last be able to follow the lessons for her class, grade 4aG of “Francesco Riso” primary school in Mondello (Palermo), from the yacht she has to stay on due to health problems that prevent her from living on dry land.

Niki’s right to an education will be assured thanks to the new technologies made available by Telecom Italia and Telespazio, in the framework of a special project run by the Ministry of Education, Universities and Research.

In particular, Telespazio will provide, free of charge, a Fullsat access facility able to connect the special antenna installed on the boat belonging to Niky’s parents, the Walkyrie, to the Fucino teleport, from which her connection then reaches the schoolroom throught the Internet. As well as allowing Niky to keep up with her schoolwork, this project is also a pioneering experiment in the field of remote education.

Niky, who turned nine on the 19th of October, suffers from a severe form of “intrinsic asthma”, and the only way she can survive without asthma attacks and without having to take medicines all the time is by living in contact with the sea. In 1998 her parents decided to change their lifestyle and find a way of living at sea. From March 1999 to February 2003, they spent their time and savings building a 26-metre yacht in their garden : a two-mast sailboat called Walkirye. And this is the boat that little Niky has been living on since April 2004.
