Telespazio will participate at the ASTRO+ Final Demonstration Event that will be held in Toulouse (City of the Space) on March 10th. The ASTRO+ Event consists of a conference on “The role of space in European security operations”. Telespazio R&D is in charge for the coordination, realization and validation of the ASTRO+ Navigation system component. |
ASTRO+ project has been selected in 2004 to be the first
project linking space and security under the auspices
of the « Preparatory Action for Security Research
» initiated by the European Commission. This project has
been awarded a grant of 2.2 MEuros in 2004 and will be completed
in March 2006 with a final presentation and demonstration
on March 10th, 2006 in Toulouse at City of the Space.
ASTRO+ aim is to show to EU stakeholders the potential of using Space to support Security operations. It is organised in 3 strands:
- Mission oriented aspect to demonstrate in realistic
situation the added value of space to the different end-users:
military staff, NGO’s and civil security.
- The integration of the different space technologies
(this includes the transfer of technologies available
in laboratories):
   o Earth Observation,
   o Telecommunication and
   o Navigation.
- Identification of high efficiency-to-cost R&T directions,
for short to long-term service improvement.
One of the main characteristics of ASTRO+ is to take benefit from the constant involvement of a large community of end-users and stakeholders to better assess the social and political significance of this innovative space project for Europe. For this reason, a security situation was already simulated with success last 8th of February in Zegrze (Warsaw), Poland at MCI (Military Communication Institute) premises. Twelve high-level decision-makers and the Polish Minister of Economy (under-secretaries of state, Members of Parliament) attended to the final exercise event.
The ASTRO+ final presentation and demonstratAion event
of 10th of March consists of a conference on “The role
of space in European security operations”. ASTRO+ main features
and results gathered during the final exercise in Poland
will be presented. In particular the space technologies
for security operation and how these have been used by ASTRO+
will be presented. In addition a film on the ASTRO+ final
exercise performed in Zegrze (Warsaw - Poland) will be shown
to demonstrate the potential of using Space to support Security
operation.
In the context of ASTRO+, Telespazio R&D is in charge for the coordination, realization and validation of the ASTRO+ Navigation system component. It uses and integrates radio time signal transmitted by the satellites and by mobile terrestrial networks to enable:
- the users deployed on-field of security operation (referred as On-Field User) to determine their exact location also in hostile environment (i.e. urban areas)
- the user at the Operational Center (referred as OC User) to manage and track every where anytime the On-Field Users.
A presentation on the ASTRO+ Navigation system component
will be held by Telespazio Chief Industrial Officer, ing.
M. Francois during the morning session of the event.
ASTRO+ consortium is represented by EADS Astrium (F/UK), Infoterra (UK), Alcatel Alenia Space (F/I), Telespazio (I), Istituto Affari Internazionali (I), Centre National d’Etudes Spatials (CNES) European Union Satellite Center(EUSC), and the Space research Centre from Polish Academy of science.
