COSMO-SkyMed: ready to be launched!

The countdown for the launch of the COSMO-SkyMed satellite has started. The first satellite of the constellation will be launched from Vandenberg in California at 7.21 p.m. PST, 4:21 a.m. of 8 June 2007 in Italy, on board of a Boeing Delta II.

COSMO-SkyMed is the result of a cooperation agreement between the Italian Ministry of Defence and the Italian Space Agency. It consists of a four-radar-satellite constellation for the Observation of the Earth from space for “dual” use (civil institutional, military and commercial). Its purpose is to monitor and survey the globe for civil protection (environmental risk management), strategic (defence and national security), scientific and commercial purposes.
COSMO-SkyMed is a leading-edge product which operates with a high-resolution radar capable of observing the entire globe, including at night and under any weather condition. The system will be built gradually, with the launch of the first satellite scheduled by 7 June 2007 and the remaining three at different stages, so as to complete the constellation by 2009.

Italy’s commitment and technological level are such that the COSMO-SkyMed system has been created completely by its main aerospace companies, including small and medium firms: Thales Alenia Space Italia is the General Contractor responsible for the entire system, inclusive of the space and ground segments, whilst Telespazio (A Finmeccanica/Thales company) is responsible for the construction of the civil and military grounds segments.

The construction of the COSMO-SkyMed system has already allowed Italy to implement important international agreements in the field of Earth Observation, in both the civil and military fields, particularly with France, thanks to the existing Intergovernmental Agreement, and with Argentina, on the basis of a cooperation project in the civil sector between this country and the Italian Space Agency.
