Telespazio technical sponsor of “OLTRE. Beyond the edge”, the Arctic expedition that will recreate Amundsen’s voyage

Telespazio, a Finmeccanica/Thales company,
is to be the technical sponsor of the Arctic
expedition "OLTRE. Beyond the edge”,
that, from November 2008 to March 2009,
on the 90th anniversary of Norwegian Roald
Amundsen's route through the North East
Passage, will attempt to retrace the journey
from North Cape to the Bering Straits.
As one of the world’s leading operators
in space services, Telespazio is delighted
to be able to contribute to the success
of this expedition, by providing the OLTRE
team with the most advanced communications
and satellite monitoring technology. In
particular, Telespazio will provide the
expedition with telecommunications systems
that will enable the team to transmit data,
video and voice during the long months of
the voyage, in extreme weather conditions.
Telespazio will also process the satellite
images from the journey, thanks to the satellites
of the COSMO-SkyMed constellation of the
Italian Space Agency and Ministry of Defence.
The COSMO-SkyMed satellites are equipped
with radar sensors that can monitor the
entire planet with very short revisiting
time and transmit detailed images, including
those taken at night or in heavy cloud cover.
