The first radar satellite image of Haiti acquired by COSMO-SkyMed

COSMO-SkyMed, the Italian radar satellite constellation, acquired a high-resolution Spot image on 14 January 2010 of Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince. Further acquisitions to obtain elements that will help assess the effects of the earthquake on the affected area have already been planned.

COSMO-SkyMed Stripmap archive image from April 26, 2009 of the area of of the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince. Another COSMO-SkyMed acquisition with the same geometry is planned, which will allow interferometric techniques to be applied to the pair of images, giving information on the deformation of the terrain caused by the earthquake.

Haiti, new image from COSMO-SkyMed
processed by e-GEOS
ILU map of the Port-au-Prince
area.
In the ILU (Interferometric Land use modified) map red elements show areas where there is a big difference in the backscattering between the pre and the post event images and therefore these areas could have been affected
by the earthquake.
Red: Absolute value
of the difference between the pre and
post SAR detetcted amplitude (26.04.2009
- 15.04.2009)
Green: Mean value of
the difference between the pre and post
SAR detetcted amplitude (26.04.2009
- 15.04.2009)
Blue:
Interferometric coherence (26.04.2009
- 15.04.2009)

The COSMO-SkyMed program
was originally developed through an agreement
between the Italian space agency (ASI) and
Ministry of Defense. Thales Alenia Space
(a Thales/Finmeccanica joint venture) is
the prime contractor, with responsibility
for the entire system.Telespazio (a Finmeccanica/Thales
joint venture) was responsible for manufacturing
the civil and military ground segments.
It manages the constellation’s in-orbit
operations and data acquisition and processing.
For civil applications, COSMO-SkyMed data
are marketed by e-GEOS, a company created
by the Italian Space Agency (20%) and Telespazio
(80%). |
