SODI -The SODI Experiments                                                                                  
  SODI (Selectable Optical Diagnostics Instrument) is a class 2 payload for scientific experiments in fluid physics on board the ISS.

The payload is supplied with various optical analysis instruments including a Mach-Zhender interferometer and particle image velocimetry and near-field scattering diagnostic tools. It was specifically designed to study the Soret effect on liquid diffusion phenomena (SODI DSC) in order to understand the effect of heat vibrations on diffusion (SODI IVIDIL) and to analyse the typical dynamics of the aggregation of colloidal solutions in a reduced gravity environment (SODI COLLOID).
A unique type of modular architecture (containing various subsystems that can be assembled as required according to the type of phenomenon under examination) offers the necessary degree of flexibility to examine such a wide spectrum of issues. In addition, SODI harnesses the potential offered by the Microgravity Science Glovebox (MSG). The MSG, which was developed by the European Space Agency and integrated by the NASA Marshall Space Flight Centre (MSFC), is a class 1 facility currently housed near the FSL in the ISS Columbus module.

Telespazio is the Facility Responsible Centre (FRC) and European User Support Operations Centre (USOC) for SODI, and at its premises in Naples it receives telemetry (H&S and scientific telemetry), issues commands for the payload and provides console operators.
The Payload Operations Integration Centre (POIC) at the MSFC in Huntsville, Alabama, is the NASA interface for Telespazio operators and also includes the MSG Operations Team.

In its capacity as FRC, Telespazio designed the mission scenario (Mission Operation Implementation Concept), implemented the ground segment and associated ground data services, and developed all the products required to manage the payload (flight and ground procedures, displays, payload regulations, ground rules, joint operation interface procedures and the payload technical support concept) in direct co-operation with NASA on behalf of the European Space Agency.
